about

Legendary Philly saxist/poet, Elliott Levin, has been fixture on the Philly (and Downtown) scene for more than four decades. A founding member of several legendary yet under-recognized bands: Olduvai, Iltar, Take Iki and later New Ghost (great disc on ESP), as well as collaborating with Cecil Taylor (from the seventies onwards), Marshall Allen and practically every great creative band to emerge from Philly since the early seventies, Mr. Levin lives to sit in and often pops up at numerous sessions anywhere and everywhere. It shouldn’t surprise anyone that Mr. Levin was in Mexico last year and recorded this duo CD with Cosmic Brotherhood drummer Gabriel Lauber. This disc begins with “Yu”, a short blast of free/jazz at its most intense, blistering tenor and drums! Besides being the major voice on sax and flute, Mr. Levin is also thoughtful, incisive poet as well as a compelling spoken word artist. Levin’s poetry is found unjust a few pieces but always evokes ideas and images well worth considering. This duo is super tight, and sound as if they are one spirit/force erupting together. Mr. Levin is also a master flutist and takes a few rambunctious flute solos here. I found this entire disc to be consistently captivating with all of the elements tied together into one great master tapestry golden threads. There is way too much great stuff here to describe it all so I will eave it to you to spend some time with this: “Prayer for the Ancestors” is where it ends up.
